lisa congdon + anatomie

i posted about lisa congdon last week over at diesel and i thought i'd also bring that post here, since i'm loving her latest work so much, called anatomie.

when I first saw the latest solo show "anatomie" from san francisco-based mixed-media artist/illustrator, lisa congdon i was an instant fan. being held at rare device in brooklyn, ny her show is all about the world of anatomy with a french twist. but its more than that. what's interesting here is the mixed media involved, the anatomy of the human body mixed with playing cards, children's blocks, hand-drawn illustrations and found ephemera. images you see in medical text books made into beautiful works of art to hang on the wall. the surprise of the subject, makes one's mind bend, adjust, accept, want and understand.

lisa congdon is a self-taught artist who works in several mediums, including paper collage, screen-printing, ink, textiles, and paint. She uses her lack of training to her advantage, instead of following a refined technique, she works with her own sense of color, composition and design as her guide.
