kalon studios

One can't go wrong with design for a sustainable culture, and Kalon Studios is not only sustainable, their product is also beautiful and functional. Researching further, Kalon is an ancient greek concept, meaning "the highest form of beauty". An appropriate name then.

Their Isometric chair represents a union of two distinct elements. Using the structural integrity of bamboo, made with 100% all natural, non toxic and sustainable materials and the precision of CNC manufacturing locally. Available with or without their delicately carved motifs.

The Ioline changing trunk, a personal favorite, is an answer to functionality without leaving the aesthetics behind. A unique changing table designed to fit anywhere in a home. Storage space below large enough to hold diapers, wipes and creams, p.j.'s and onesies. And can be used as a reading bench and toy chest for toddlers.

wonderland retreat

remember the wonderland retreat crew? they started a little etsy shop in early april 2007 to help alleviate the medical bills of a fellow crafter, alison gordon. well, great news! she's back in action, working full time and feels pretty good about getting back to normalcy.

now there is another creative who needs help. elijah wyman is an artist, crafts person and musician who recently underwent a kidney transplant. post operation, elijah will be on intensive medicines for quite some time, some even for the rest of his life.

so the wonderland crew are at it again, with all of the proceeds from their shop benefiting elijah and his recovery expenses, expenses that can reach upwards of $210,000.

they say they have lots of great items, donated from lots of incredible crafters!

new feature - cool blog of the week

i've decided to add a new feature here, "cool blog of the week". it seems like i just can't keep up with all the blogs coming at me and to keep track and to do a post or to update my template is just about becoming nearly impossible or so it seems. so as a way to plug all those great blogs out there and to recognize and support them, i've dedicated a page to these weekly picks which will be chosen every thursday and posted on my sidebar as well. the blog chosen will be welcome to post this little banner (below) to let their readers know they've been picked.

so the first one i'd like to introduce the jotter blog, and as their tag explains what they are all about, "write here, write now" (always loved that jesus jones song), there is no other explanation needed.

so check back here every thursday for a new cool blog of the week!

cindy jaswal

Cindy Jaswal is a Vancouver-based mixed media artist who concentrates on environmental issues both in theme and practice. She works with pen and ink drawings, paintings, printmaking, handmade books and photography. She takes inspiration from the natural world around her and pays particular attention to the place where the land and sea meet, spending much of her time observing the areas in and around Vancouver and Vancouver Island. The colours and textures of the coast help to inform her work literally and abstractly.

Born in Victoria, B.C., Cindy studied at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design receiving a BFA in 2000. After the birth of her first child in 2004, she has focused on a series of drawings that evoke the theme of the vessel.

Her newly released works, a three-print set, The Trickster Triptych is a limited edition of pen and ink prints set in a handmade linen case. Also a beautiful and amazingly affordable raven linen pouch is another favorite with her original drawing of a baby raven on the front.

Jaswal's new personal website, cedarseven.com and her Cedar Seven Etsy Shop showcase her beautiful work which is made on tree free paper or 100% post consumer recycled paper. Her textile goods and baby textiles are most often 100% organic cotton, organic flannel, linen, wool felt and vintage fabrics.

summer cottage for the scrapbook

i truly enjoyed this article in canadian house and home this month. i mean, i don't know if i could live with so much white and wicker, but as a summer cottage, i love the tropical atmosphere and unique approach to decorating, using things that you wouldn't think would go together, such as baroque frames and 70's style fireplaces. but surprisingly it really works. and the idea of putting beach mats on the wall in the bath is making me want to go down to the dollar store right now and pick up 20. click on the images for close-ups.

i finally finished my postcards for hulaseventy's summer postcard swap this weekend and dropped them into the mailbox last night. as i covered both sides with designs, i ended up having no room left to write on them, so had to include a note with them. my postcards represent summer showing weather charts (note the "H" - high pressure system), "21" for the first day of summer and the wood represents the logs we sit on at our beaches here on the west coast that roll off the logging barges and drift to shore. yay summer and thanks andrea for hosting this fabulous swap! i can hardly wait to see mine!

Book Review: Mingering Mike by Dori Hadar

Book Review: Mingering Mike, The Amazing Career of an Imaginary Soul Superstar by Dori Hadar
Published by Princeton Architectural Press

Digging through crates of old records at a Washington, D.C. flea market back in December of 2003, Dori Hadar (DJ by night, criminal investigator by day) came across a box of old vinyl records, or what looked like records. But what he found was over fifty albums and even more singles of handmade "faux" albums of a career of imaginary soul superstar, Mingering Mike.

Putting his detective skills to work, Hadar hunted down Mingering Mike thirty years or so after his last album. As a boy, Mike lost himself in a world of his own imaginary susperstardom. Basing songs and albums on life experiences, from teenage love songs to political upheaval during the Vietnam war.

What I like about this book is that one could totally relate and see oneself doing something like this in childhood. Perhaps not to this degree, but I'm sure we've all imagined, and if we were artistically inclined, drew ourselves in some imaginary book, song album or film.

Being a folk art fan and having the appreciation for hand lettering, I'm really drawn to the creative and imagination that went into drawing all those cardboard records. And because the albums were made during a particular time in history, they support its status as both folk and contemporary art according to the Folk Art Magazine.

A book for someone who appreciates hand-lettering, folk art and in particular urban black american popular culture.

New Site - ECIAD Studio Shop

vancouver's own, emily carr institute of art and design has taken the leap and is opening up a studio shop for that will feature the work of talented artists, designers and artisans within the ECI community. as studioshop is always looking for original and innovative work in all mediums, all artists, craftspeople and designers from within the ECI community (students, alumni, faculty and staff) are encouraged to submit their work. the shop will be opening this fall.

what they would like are a few of us readers to take a look over at the preview site and take the survey, as they need input to make studioshop as effective as possible. so it's less than two minutes and you can be entered in a draw to win a $25 studioshop gift certificate. periodic table printmaking project

i just got a heads up from kate at nydam press about an exciting project she's participating in called "the periodic table printmaking project. it is organized by jennifer schmitt, a woodblock artist (azuregrackle.etsy.com). the project consists of over eighty-five different printmakers from the us., canada, the uk, italy, germany, norway and australia, with the goal to create a finished table of elements (118 prints in all), represented in the printmaking mediums only (woodcut, linocut, monotype, etching, lithograph, silkscreen or any combination).

there is something about this project that is really exciting to me as it combines printmaking with the focus on "science images" (as art) and promoting both art and science, which is really coming to the consciousness right now and it's still so fresh! thanks kate for letting us know about this. (gallery owners: this needs to be in a gallery or something, and i would love to be able to buy prints!)

here's a few links to read more. periodic table printmaking project website; period table project flickr pool; more info. a few favorites (above and highlighted below):

thought this was worthy of noting. read over the weekend at veer that national geographic was making this adventure paper which turns out to be waterproof. great for printing out maps on your inkjet so if you get caught in that storm while on your map adventure you won't need to worry about the paper turning to mush.

Book Review: By Hand, The Use of Craft in Contemporary Art

By Hand, The Use of Craft in Contemporary Art, Shu Hung and Joseph Magliaro, editors
Princeton Architectural Press, New York

When first opening this book, being a visual person, I couldn't help but flip through the pages and take in the quality of artists featured in this collection showcasing methods of art where hands are used in the production of their work.

With the emphasis on the handmade these days, this book arrives at a timely juncture to inspire other creatives, inform and to emphasize the importance of expression through art via craft. It is not a book that attempts to distinguish between art and design, art and craft or craft and design, but presents a look at a diverse list of creatives who use their hands to make their art, (a type of art that is featured on this blog on a regular basis and a movement that has changed the way we look at art in a traditional sense).

I've chosen a few favorites from the book to show here starting off with these sewn recycled sweater tea and cup cozies named the Muji Mook (above photo) by Tim Denton and Johanna Van Daalen of Belfast, Ireland. Reknitting a new item out of a sweater creating a typical english object (a tea cozy) for a typical Japanese tea set in response to an invitation from the Muji company to alter an existing item bought from their shop.

(Left) Standing Still (wool and acrylic yarn), installed along Canal Street, New York by Robyn Love; (Right) Warm Hands Cushion by Electricwig, Tim Denton and Johanna Van Daalen.

"I was Lying When I Said..." (thread on muslin) by Tucker Schwarz, San Francisco, California who creates drawings that are sewn on to fabric based on photographs she's taken.

(Left) Country Life (embroidery thread on printed fabric) by Kent Henricksen; (Right) Camera (thread and vellum) by Rob Wynne.

It's a beautiful and inspirational book for both the artist and the person who loves the arts. From hand lettering, illustration, to embroidery this book covers artists from a vast array of handmade works and would be a lovely summer read to spark ideas for the winter that follows.

pics from MADE's kristiina lahde exhibition

thanks to MADE for sending over these photos from their latest exhibition by canadian, kristiina lahde. as i posted earlier last week, her intricate paper cutting and altering of ordinary bank envelopes were built by tearing open the envelopes and then stapling them together to create these spheres, reminiscent of the buckminster fuller building for expo '67.

the exhibition is open now until july 14th/07 at MADE, 867 Dundas Street West, Toronto, Canada.
