re-cap & trends 9 & 10 - {canadian house & home 2008 trends issue}

i'm going to speed up on the last two posts of 2008 trends i was posting about prior to christmas (to be honest, it's getting a little tiring/boring?) and even though i'm not exactly sold on the trend thing, (i'm more of the "do what you love" school - when it comes to design); i still like to highlight what's out there (from a canadian point of view); for inspiration, and as kate bingaman-burt says, "in order to design for culture, you must be aware of it". so that said, here's a fast capture of the top 10 trends for 2008 as picked by canadian house and home:

1. forest
2. jewel box
3. casino
4. granny-chic
5. modern baby
6. fair trade
7. neo-classical
8. root vegetable
9. global textiles (see below)
10. hot & cold (see below)

trend no. 9 - global textiles:

fabrics from the international bazaar, representing morocco and peru, malaysian pillows, navaho rugs and suzani wall hangings from central asia (all placed within white walls). (image below from canadian h&h trends issue): photo by michael graydon

trend no. 10 - hot & cold

a variation on the metallic theme, with new vibes from warm colored metals paired with cool hues like lavender, corals and lemon. metals mixed with each other. (image below from canadian h&h trends issue): photo michael graydon

trend no. 8 - root vegetable: {canadian h&h 2008 trends issue}

root vegetable - another trend mentioned at canadian house and home's '08 trend issue for january lends itself to the hues of beet red, yam orange and chocolate browns. i'm thinking of this as a winter themed influence. (images above - ceramics by elizabeth burritt and inspiration page from canadian h&h).

trend no. 7 - neo classical: {canadian h&h 2008 trends issue}

this is the trend i mentioned about in my first post about canadian house and home's '08 trends issue which sort of scared me. perhaps it was the colors picked for the inspiration page (see above photo for h&h); the hues yellows, blues and blacks; (maybe not the trend as much as the colors). some pieces that attract me are the silhouettes (portrait ones); the grecian patterns, and the idea of fun colors used with them. here's a few items i found around with this theme in mind; (above mirror from anthrolpologie):

doily girl framed print by trace my face

chairs by draga obradovoic

apollo linen pillow by thomas paul

vintage neoclassical style boudoir lamps from paris hotel boutique

draga obradovic

i came across these beautiful chairs and pillows by draga obradovic via the decocentric blog. draga graduated from the academia di belle arti with a degree in painting in 1988. as a designer she attempts to achieve a union between painting and style. through years of refining her painting technique directly onto fabrics this process naturally lent itself to furniture where she started a collection in 2006.

trend no. 4 - granny chic: {canadian house and home 2008 trends issue}

this has been fun this past week posting on the 2008 trends issue from canadian house and home. and i still can't believe there's still seven more i still have to cover. next up. "granny chic". the doilies are still showing up after a long haul on the circuit and this time are being matched up with things like crochet square throws in bright vibrant candy colors, pop art portraits and dainty floral patterns. and to start off with it i spotted these esther derkx improved crockery platters & tea cups at reform school (above image).

mushroom pincushions by cathy of california at reform school.

when i think of doilies, i automatically think of lisa solomon and her doily work and this beautiful print, "a bed dreams a blue doily dream".

trend no. 3 - casino: {canadian h & h 2008 trends issue}

all this week i've been posting on the canadian house and home's 2008 trends article in their january issue. this next one is called "casino" and reminds me a bit of design sponge's visit last spring to milan when she posted about the disco influence there at the milan show. i found these items a little harder to find in my usual haunts and this really wouldn't work in my rainforest life, but i totally could see in a highrise downtown. photography in above photo by michael graydon (except light, chest, dinnerware, bowl) for h&h - suite by kelly wearstler, hard rock hotel & casino, las vegas).

I recently had posted a write-up of the book "Taking Things Seriously" by Joshua Glenn and Carol Hayes.

WNYC are putting together a photo project related to the book which sounds interesting.

WNYC's "The Leonard Lopate Show" is inviting people to post photos of personally meaningful objects and the stories related to them to the "Taking Things Seriously" Flickr feed (www.flickr.com/groups/seriousobject/).

Deadline to post is Dec. 19 at noon. Lopate will talk about the most interesting submissions on-air on Dec. 21, and the show will be available as an mp3 shortly after.

trend no. 1 - forest: {canadian h & h: 2008 trends issue}

canadian house and home's january "trends" issue is out which is usually a good read. last year they blew me away with their issue. this year's forecast, isn't as exciting and i don't see alot of new products (like last year), but there's still a few that inspire (and one that scares me). here's the first in their list (stay tuned for more this week):

Trend No. 1 - Forest: wood grains, tree/twig style furniture, owls, mushrooms, moss (nothing new here, wood grains still prominent, more graphic than literal). i searched out a few good examples (see below) including two of theirs (the thomas paul wood-grain stationery & oly vincent half-round table):

small stump's log village print

new growth print by groundwork

oly studio's vincent half-round table (as seen in h&h)

mossy log contianer, small stump

tamar mogendorff mushroom from rose and radish

the december poppytalk handmade market launches today, featuring more amazing artists that we are so thrilled to be representing! the market is a holiday madness and sale theme, where participants are selling items from gifts of art, jewelry, accessories, holiday decorating items to cards, calendars, t-shirts and even more toys than we've had in the past! and then come boxing day, the "sale" part of the market kicks in till the 4th of january!

we've also added a few new features to this month! we've included a few new categories, photography and clothing! we've enlarged all the images, renamed the "latest updates" to "fresh at the market" (with really large images) and my favorite, a navigation menu that includes all the artists and designers!

with 14 days left till christmas, there's lots of time still to get things mailed and couriered to friends and family! thanks for supporting handmade!

fragiles, porcelain, glass & ceramics

local vancouverite, laura mckibbon whom i've posted about many a time here is included in what looks like an amazing show that just opened up this week in miami called fragiles, "an eclectic collection of contemporary porcelain, ceramic and glass objects by a new wave of designers who are manifesting their creative visions out of fragile materials. fragiles presents over fifty innovative objects that expand and challenge our notion of these classical materials and centuries of tradition by simultaneously exploring a new aesthetic approach and technological boundaries. from experimental and avant-garde to evocative retro-inspired reinterpretations, these cutting-edge examples indicate how visual culture and high tech production processes are influencing and reshaping this delicate territory in pioneering ways."

things going on

diana fayt (loving her porcelain tags - above) is having a holiday sale this weekend and next which would definitely be worth a visit if you're in the berkeley area. it will be her last sale of the year. here's the details:

4th & clay holiday sale
open 11 a.m. until 6 p.m saturday & sunday
december 8th & 9th
december 15th & 16th
4th & clay
2390 C 4th Street @ Channing
Berkeley, California 94710

also while there, check out rae dunn's sweet little snowflake ornaments (below). i think they are in the same gallery.

also kelly lynn jones has just returned from her artist residency in vermont a week ago and has a bunch of new work to put up on the site which will be sometime at the end of the month. in the meantime, she has a new print and book she just finished available on little paper planes along with some other new prints. to see them go here.

and one of my favorite hand lettering artists, kate bingham of obsessive consumption is installing a show at rare device in san francisco which is opening this friday night, december 7th from 6-10. she'll be selling limited edition small prints as well as original daily drawings, pillows and zines. she's been busy creating screenprinted paper chains for an insane holiday store window display (as she puts it)! psst....and she's decided to sell her daily drawings here!

also in you're in the vancouver area, shiny fuzzy muddy 8 is happening down at video in studios, 1965 main street (between 3rd and 4th) featuring poppy favorites such as jasna sokolovic and laura mckibbon!
