julie and kathryn of perfectbound (a design partnership blog out of winnipeg) not only share a love for design, but also an interest in similar collections. from teacups & saucers to all things type. here's a little peak into their world and answers to my questions:

Why you collect these items and how your collection started?
We have many things in common, and among them are our collections. We've recently started a collection of vintage design books and Peguin paperbacks, as well as type (any kind of type). This was sparked by our love of typography and pattern. Also, we both collect teacups and saucers, particularly vintage pieces. The range of pattern, colour, and style are what draw us. Like little pieces of practical art.



How do you display them or would like to display them?
Currently, our teacups are dispersed around our homes in vignettes or with our other dishes. We haven't really considered hanging them on the wall or putting them in any sort of cabinet. We like like to use them whenever we can. Our books are displayed on our bookshelves and our type is stored away until we need them. {see top photo}

What are your favorite pieces in the collection, is there anything unique?
We both love our Franklin Gothic type, (though Letrasets are fun!) but our favourite cups and books differ a bit:

Kathryn: My favourite teacup would be the light blue one with the gold pattern and my favourite book is the green patterned Penguin book and
Anatomy for Interior Designers.

Julie: I love the saturated turquoise teacup that Kathryn got me as a gift. As for the books, the red Penguin paperback with the jester hat pattern (it's a book on comic verse).



What piece are you most looking for, and what piece would complete your collection?
We're pretty much in agreement for this. We're looking for more solid saturated colours in teacups and would love to complete our collection of The Penguin Poets books. For our type collection, Bodoni and Century Gothic, preferably in a small point size. We're keeping our fingers crossed for that one!




Besides this collection, if you could collect anything in the world, what would it be?
We'd love a collection of vintage type specimen books or a collection of cameras because we both love photography. But if any of you have been reading our blog, you would know that we already have a few cameras to start that off!
