To faux bois or not to faux bois?

fauxbois2From Knack Studios (this image as spotted on Scoutie Girl).

Now that summer is nearly upon us I am excited to start some makeovers on a couple of pieces of furniture in our home including this dresser (a hand-me-down my grandmother). This dresser has been white, it's been stained dark brown, and now it's in it's natural state, waiting it's next re-do. Martha Stewart Living (May 09 issue) had a great article in it on easy painting technique projects and I'm seriously considering trying the faux-bois on this one. I found a few other samples online for inspiration. I'm just a little perplexed as to colors at the moment, any input, thoughts, experiences? Please feel free to comment or email!

I keep spying Something's hiding in Here's loft and I love it every time!

I love faux bois, as long as it is not too over powering! Small bits here and there are great, but I think an entire room covered in it would be unpleasant!

I'm a sucker for all things faux bois -- I'm all for it!

Faux Bois is awesome and as fresh sodapop said "a little goes a long way." If your nervous about venturing into faux bois try this trick. Photocopy a faux bois pattern in the color of your choice (full color or black & white) and decoupage it onto the surface of the project your working on, like the drawer fronts. I love a bright color with a tonal print.

Loving all the fun faux bois but I have to say Knack's, Rusty and Clyde are beckoning to come home with me. Great post.

Very cool! I guess I will have to go pick up the issue and try my hand at it...I have a sewing table that would be a perfect candidate.

Jan, that dresser is gorgeous as it is! I like faux bois, but I'm not sure that I'm a fan of the bright, bright colors I've been seeing it in lately...maybe I just love the real thing too much.

Thanks so much Jan for featuring my piece! You're awesome!

My piece is actually paper deco'ed onto the drawer front......but I was flippin' out when I saw the Martha version! I may have to try the tool........

My colors were kind of dictated by the paper, but I always love gray and orange or any kind of tone on tone coloring!

I'll admit that I haven't been game to try it on any furniture, but I do love to use it in the backgrounds of my artwork!

I agree with the whole 'less is more idea' too. And I prefer the base and the woodgrain colour not to have too much contrast between them - a little more subtle than in-your-face - but that's just me!

Now, to find my woodgraining tool... you've got me wanting to use it again!

I was just reading my Martha magazine on this subject. I like that green dresser - but I really wish they had put white knobs on it. Every time I look at it I think it needs knobs!
I think the table from Knack is wonderful. All these images are lovely Jan!

Thanks
F.

Thank you everyone for all your input. I too like the "as it is", but perhaps I'm just feeling it needs a little lift. wondering though if skill-wise I could master this and if I could, how long I would like it before I would want to change it. Maybe I should just go with a plain paint cover job? And knobs, yes knobs, where are those knobs Fiona?

A little late to the party here, but couldn't stop myself from commenting.

I don't like faux bois. I think it's gross and cheesy. I've seen it on so many surfaces (including real wood?!).

Martha Stewart loves it, though . . . so what do I know?

Yes, why go from bois to faux bois? Especially considering someone probably put some sweat equity into that dresser by stripping off its original faux fumed-oak finish! Iron twig handles might be nice ...

Thanks everyone for all you fabulous suggestions - (it was my sweaty equity that went into stripping it initially) - just getting a bit tired of it is all....
