Instant Hutong

Instant Hutong is a project by Italian Artists, Marcella Campa and Stefano Avesani who have been focusing on the urban growth of Chinese cities and their transformation since 2003. Representing different maps of the hutong areas in Bejing, they are hand embroidered with the same technique of the propaganda slogans on large fabrics used by the communist party during the seventies. The carpets have been filled with white wire wool insertions. During 2009 the urban carpets were being shown to the Hutong dwellers inside the courtyards and on public lanes sharing the project and bringing them back to the city districts they were inspired from. Wow these are very interesting. I wonder what the Chinese people living there thought when they looked at these works of art, and how much regeneration they have seen themselves.
