This Week from Lisa Congdon: For the Love of the Bison

by Lisa Congdon

bison-standing

Recently I have become enamored with the species of animal called Bovidae, or Bovids. They are a species of 140 different cloven-hoofed mammals, including water buffalo, antelopes, gazelles, sheep, goats, muskox, yaks, domestic cattle, and my favorite: the bison. I am not sure what it is about the enormous furry horned beast that I find so amazing, but lately I am in love.

Not surprisingly, Etsy is chock full of bison-related stuff. Here are some of my favorites:

First, the not so ubiquitous and very cool bison tee . This one by Etsy Seller CritterJitters. This one is on my list of "to-gets."

bison4

Next we have the bison riding a bike (with a bunch of other animals on his back) print. Otherwise known as Why are those animals on a bike (Question Mark) . This clever print is by Etsy Seller VROOOOOM.

bison1

And for those of us secretly wishing for a bison head over our fireplace (but are also sort of creeped out by the idea), we have the Billy Jr. Medium Bison Head cardboard taxidermy by Etsy seller cj8n.

bison5

Speaking of creepy, I am in love with Etsy seller GrandOleBestiary's Ulysses L Bison III - Bison Photographic Art Print . Oh, and in case you are wondering, Grand Ole Bestiary is (and I quote) "a collection of faux-antique, anthropomorphic, mythological curios that were recovered from an ancient archival vault found buried deep inside the core of a metaphysical holy mountain." Awesome.

bison3

Totally not creepy and most definitely adorable is Etsy seller Studio Lyon's rendition of the bison .

bison6

Last but certainly not least are these really beautiful (love the color) linocut cards of bison by Etsy seller melissakate.

bison2

Are you a fan of the bison and other bovidae? Stay tuned, as artist Amy Ruppel and I are collaborating on an upcoming show featuring paintings of the hairy horned beasts of the bovid family scheduled to open at Rare Device in November. We'll keep you posted.

Moooo, and happy Monday.

Muslamb Letterpress + Paper Goods

I have a friend who is Muslim and she always takes the time to give us a phone call at Christmas to wish us a merry one, (which I always thought was a really nice gesture). I in turn, will phone her during Ramadan and wish her a blessed Ramadan. I like this tradition we have and now I think I'll surprise her this year with a Ramadan Mubarak Card and an Eid Mubarak Card (since Eid is just around the corner too). I'm happy to have found Muslamb Paper Goods + Design. It's an etsy shop chocked full of Islamic letterpress paper goodness.

Call for Submissions: Mixed Tape Market

Arrow Print Fabric from Compulsively Created
Our deadline for submissions for our Mixed Tape market at Poppytalk Handmade is this monday, August 31st! Did August not fly by? I keep playing catch up and realized I never posted about this 'till now. We are accepting applications for our September market which is the start of the holiday season market line-up! So the next three months we don't have a specific theme as we normally do for the rest of the year, but a "mixed bag" of wonderfulness! So anything handmade and vintage - and holiday themed too. For instance, our September market we usually see a few ghosts and goblins popping about, come October we see Thanksgiving and a bit of Christmas and then November it's a fun mix of holiday cheer, and every month is full of unique one-of-a-kind gifts and decorations. So if you're interested in joining us for September, just send your submission to poppytalkblog[at]yahoo[dot]ca with the words, "Mixed Tape Submission" in the subject line. We're excited to see your submissions!

(For those of you not familiar with how our market concept works, you can read more here and you'll find our market schedule here).

Inspiration: Colour

from canadian house and home

Inspired by a visit to a nearby beach today, I was reminded of an article in Canadian House and Home from Dec '07 where they featured the hues of Canada's varied landscapes. I wrote a post about them at the Townhouse pondering the idea of different colours. Click here to read. (Photo credit: Felix Wedgewood).

100 Ladies

by Hulaseventy

Completely charmed by Danielle Distefano's 100 Ladies currently showing at Youngblood Gallery and Boutique.

I stumbled onto the show while visiting Youngblood (one of my favorite places in Atlanta) and was totally smitten.

Tattoo artist Danielle Distefano's beautifully detailed watercolor portraits pay homage to the sweetest of tattoo subjects.

In love with the vintage feel of the colors, the reds and blues, the creamy skin tones. In love with the way crimson roses punctuate the portraits with nostalgia.

100 Ladies will be on display at Youngblood Gallery through August 30th and each framed and numbered piece will be available for purchase once the show is over. I don't know about you but I'd love to have a ruby-lipped, finger-waved beauty hanging someplace in my home. Next best thing to an original tattoo.

The Cup and Saucer Collective

Good friends, Heather Smith Jones and Rachel Saldana announced Wednesday a new project they are working on called, The Cup and Saucer Collective. Each item in their collection is made by hand and holds a story and purpose. They believe art and handmade goods should be of fine quality and available to all pocketbooks.

In the Cup & Saucer Shop they have four items in their first collection and the option to purchase the entire set. The main piece is their limited edition print "A quiet fullness". They combine Rachel's photography with Heather's drawing by lithography printing directly onto a professionally printed Giclee and add a third layer of their own poetry in letterpress.

The entire Cup & Saucer collection includes the limited edition print, their original hand sewn / hand painted bread bag {which are almost gone!}, a set of letterpress recipe cards, and a dollar downloadable bread recipe card. They are also currently working on the next two collections to come out later this year
