Behind the Scenes: RealLiving Magazine

I came across these awesome images on freelance writer, Belinda Graham's blog, The Happy Home of how stylists and photographers bring together a shoot for a magazine. This one, a behind-the-scenes look at a RealLiving's photo shoot for their May 2010 issue doing a kids room. She also wrote a post on how it all happens, a must-read if you're interested in that kind of stuff. Lots of great info on all the work involved to make it all come together.

So fun to see the process. All these years I kinda thought they were taking pictures of "real" kids rooms. The jokes on me, lol.

Just have to say it's humorous to see a mag called Real Living...where none of the rooms shown are real.

Now, I don't feel so bad about my boys' room. ;)

Very interesting posting. Even though the rooms are "fake", I love what they did to each and every one of them.

That's really interesting. I suppose I am pretty naive, because I always assumed that the pictures were taken in real rooms. SIGH.

Thanks for sharing the pics from the creative process. I always like to see how a spread is made.

Quick question: Is the rug from the first few photos from Ikea (do you know by any chance?).

Thanks,

Marija

I always thought they were pictures from perfect peoples' homes too! Ha! And that's completely ridiculous isn't it considering I used to work for a staging (real estate) company, and a high-end interior designer...

hi guys
thanks for linking to my post. just wanted to let you know that a lot of spaces in mags are actually shot in real people's homes/rooms. but ocassionally for shoots highlighting trends, shopping shoots (like this one), "best of the best" etc, they'll use a studio.

using a studio allows stylists to colour the walls, use wallpaper, different floorings and really allow the decor and furniture to be the focus rather than architecture. also, if we shot in a real room all the time, it'd just be white walls and floorboards! very samey!

a good mix is best - which is what real living and most mags will do - but if you didn't realise they were sets, the goal has been achieved! too often the images from studio shoots can look empty and staged, but if it's nice to know these looked like real rooms!

Thanks Belinda for the insight and the beautiful inspiration!

pleasure! just to clarify (just realised what you wrote!) I'm not an editor there anymore. I used to be, now I'm a freelance writer who contributes regularly for them! x
