Leaf & Orla Kiely's Garden Retreat

Contributor Post from Megan at Room6

Did you guys catch the lovely Orla Kiely artisan garden retreat from the Chelsea Flower Show over on Apartment Therapy last week? I could spend some quality time in that "shed".

While looking for a photo credit for the Orla Kiely bike shot, I discovered a new-to-me digital magazine called Leaf. Their Spring 2012 issue is online here.

Dispatches from the UK: Souvenir Project for Create London

Donna Wilson

Just in time for the Olympics, CREATE London has commissioned designer and online retailer Thorsten van Elten to work with five designers: Barnaby Barford, Ed Carpenter, André Klauser, Dominic Wilcox and Donna Wilson to create well-considered (all made in the UK) souvenirs.
"The designs include a series of three exercise books that illustrate some of the best places to exercise, a cast iron multi-purpose paperweight/bookend/doorstop based on Regent’s Canal mooring bollards made in a local foundry and a series of ceramic miniature east London landmark houses and shops. They will draw on the heritage of east London and be the desirable antidote to the overly-commercial, tacky souvenirs on sale across London this summer. The souvenirs will be on sale in select shops in London and online via the CREATE website from 21 June."

I love souvenirs like this - and was delighted to see this sneak peek of Donna Wilson's on her site which includes Swimmer, Gymnast and Cyclist exercise books (above), with a map of some selected east London parks and places to cycle, swim or do gymnastics! They will come in s set of three. More info can be found at Donna's blog here.

25 of the Cutest Campers Ever!

A cute black and white awning goes perfectly with this 8 foot Starlette out of New Zealand.
Vintage Caravan Magazine

It’s that time of year when thoughts of cute campers start dancing in my head –and this year’s quest took me through the pages of Pinterest where my search for the cutest campers ever began.  From some darling Bolers to something called a Cricket –I posted them in a round-up at Babble today. Weekend Project: Decorate Outside

Sunset's latest issue has a section on upgrading your yard –this clipping; a Santa Monica backyard updated by garden designer Jamie Durie.  One idea was to add acrylic exterior wallpaper to a garage wall.  Although I haven't found any product like that - they also mention oilcloth would work too (suggesting retro floral or bold patterns –like Marimekko). Paint, wallpaper, oilcloth - whatever the medium it's a fun weekend project we think. (Image from Jamie Durie's The Outdoor Room (2; Harper Design) via Sunset Magazine.

Also love these single pot container gardens they featured where they're ditching the idea of using annual flowers and instead using succulents, shrubs and grasslike perrennials.  By Julie Chai | Set Styling: Birte Walter | Photo's by Thomas J. Story.

Affordable Art: weathered silo

One of our participants this month at Poppytalk Handmade is Mandy of weathered silo. As we feature affordable art this coming week, I'm kicking off with her latest print (above): A Collection No.9 - (mixed media painting on heavy art paper). "The simple shapes of this mixed-media painting were inspired by incessant doodles", Mandy tells us, "and is the finished grouping from the placement of the shapes, the varying sizes, and the white paint on white substrate".  (See more from the series below.

Also new in her shop this year are these original oil paintings on eco-artisan canvas, hand-stretched hemp/organic cotton fabric and salvaged Mexican Chechen hardwood. Patterned Plains No. 1 is an original oil painting inspired by the captivating views above the eastern Colorado plains. Twice a yearshe and her family are treated to “visual concerts” of colors and subtly-varied topography, and she is compelled to recreate them on canvas.

Mandy also unveiled six original paintings in a series called Dust Bowl Glimpses last summer and today she added two more paintings to the series, "The WPA Promise" and "Security".  With that she's announcing a Buy One Get One FREE offer to celebrate their arrival.  See more info at her blog by clicking here .  Visit weathered silo online at Poppytalk Handmade here (Save 10% on all items in my Etsy shop, including these featured here on Poppytalk Handmade! National Stationery Show: Part 5

Guest post by Kathryn of Blackbird Letterpress

Here are the last photos of the National Stationery Show that I was able to take. And finally some photos of our booth. I know I missed some amazing booths but I just could not get to all of them. If you like what you see, go check them out. Thanks, Jan, for having me. It's been a blast this year. I look forward to catching up on rest and then back to work. :)

Lady Bonin’s Tea Parlour

Lady Bonin’s Tea Parlour is a traveling caravan located in South Africa that travels from place to place (events, etc.) selling traditionally brewed loose-leaf tea (hot or cold) in biodegradable take-away packaging.  I ran into an article on them in Home (Tuis magazine) back in April and have been hanging on to the images below ever since, wishing, dreaming... Don't the tables and floor cushions in front look inviting?  (Images 2 and 4 by Francois Oberholster for Tuis/Home magazine).
