It's that time of year when we take a look back at the past year and have a little fun reminiscing, to see what really made our hearts flutter and think about what was the most influential in the design/art/craft world. With so much inspiration, it was hard to pick just a few. Here is part one of what should be a three or four part post.
Online Magazines
Online magazines were huge this year, and probably the most influential and popular. With the help of sites such as issue.com, creating an online magazine has made it a lot easier and affordable to make your own publication. From New York stylists to talented DIY-ers, these indie-publications are fun and filled with inspiration!
Illustrated Vintage Garlands
Illustrated garlands that have been gracing our pages for the past year are continuing to inspire on paper goods, decals and even logos. (Top to Bottom) 1. Humunuku, 2. Rifle Paper Company, 3. Shanna Murray
Succulents and Air Plants
Succulents and air plants have had a huge influence this year from bridal bouquets to holiday wreaths. Florists such as Flora Grubb out of San Francisco have really stood out with their beautiful vertical living wall gardens designs and wedding bouquets; ceramic designer Mudpuppy has made unique planters for the tillandsia. Bunting + Garlands
Garlands and bunting were everywhere from children's bedrooms to wedding parties. Definitely a fun accessory to make a place happy and festive! 1. Bliss in a Teacup. 2. Purl Soho
Flags
I love the cake flags. I first spotted them on Make Something on a beautiful cake (above) designed by Nikole Herriott. Now they are everywhere! 1. Herriott Grace, 2. Project Wedding
Colourful Triangles

The Colour Yellow

Instant Film + Polaroids
Instant film lovers dreams came true this year thanks to an incredibly devoted group of folks behind The Impossible Project. On March 22nd, at a press conference at the International Center of Photography in New York, The Impossible Project unveiled its first analog instant film for use with traditional Polaroid cameras. Crafty Industrial
Real Living Magazine featured this "Crafty Industrial" look this past year which inspired us to create a work space studio that was affordable and fun! (Above) Real Living Magazine
Restored Vintage Trailers
The restored vintage trailer has been around for a while now, but it just keeps on getting better and better, as seen here at the hotel, El Cosmico with it's Texas-inspired decor. (Above) El Cosmico.
Stripes
Stripes keep popping up in our world, and we keep loving them more and more. The Pendleton and Hudson's Bay blankets have never been more coveted. (Above): El Cosmico and Anthropologie.

This was fun to look on and ponder. It's been a full year of lots of beautiful things hasn't it? I know I may be biased having worked on spoonfulzine for the year, but actually despite or because of the recession they all seem to be such whimsical and happy things don't you think? in which case bring on more happy whimsy for 2011 I say!!

What a cool way to look back on the year. And still, I can't believe I full-on jumped on the yellow bandwagon for a few projects — it's usually one of my least favorite colours, but this year I found myself loving it.
Spot on! And I'm loving the crafty industrial (with just a TOUCH of rustic). I'm currently furnishing a new apartment on the cheap, and it's the perfect way to make do with hardly any budget. Cheers to 2010!
